To Kingdom Come: An Epic Saga of Survival in the Air War Over Germany
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.97 $The breathtaking, never-before-told, true story of a historic air- force bombing mission in 1943 Germany. On September 6, 1943, three hundred and thirty-eight B-17 "Flying Fortresses" of the American Eighth Air Force took off from England, bound for Stuttgart, Germany, to bomb Nazi weapons factories. Dense clouds obscured the targets, and one commander's critical decision to circle three times over the city-and its deadly flak-would prove disastrous. Forty-five planes went down that day, and hundreds of men were lost or missing. Focusing on first-person accounts of six of the B-17 airmen, award- winning author Robert Mrazek vividly re-creates the fierce air battle- and reveals the astonishing valor of the airmen who survived being shot down, and the tragic fate of those who did not.

Seeing Through Clouds: The Story of an Airship Apprentice
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.41 $The news of the Hindenburg crash didn't just make Erich Lindemann's miserable day worse. It changed his whole life. Germany, May 1937. Shy, cerebral Erich loves Zeppelins - silver airborne giants that span oceans in a single leap and transport the rich and famous to exotic destinations. Zeppelins also distract Erich from the fact that his best friend has joined the Hitler Youth and that his teachers are pressuring him to submit to the rigid Nazi code. Erich and his ailing mother decide to leave Berlin for the safety of his aunt's farm, only a few miles from the home base of the Zeppelins. Erich's growing mechanical skills fuel the self-confidence he needs to apply to the Zeppelin Company as an apprentice mechanic. Under the guidance of Willi Ganzler, a young mechanic, and Herr Schmidt, the ship's gruff Chief Engineer, Erich helps to build - and then actually fly - the last of the great Zeppelins. On weekends, Erich enjoys riding his motorcycle and mountain climbing with pretty, independent Beate Förster. For Erich, life is good. But as the Nazis gradually insinuate themselves into the crew, Erich finds that he is powerless to prevent them from slowly unraveling the trust and respect that had knit the ship's extended family so closely together. When Willi is arrested by the Nazi secret police, Erich is forced to make a choice that could put his life in the ultimate danger. Paul Lagasse is an award-winning freelance writer and editor whose articles have appeared in local, regional, and national magazines. He and his wife live in Baltimore, Maryland. Seeing Through Clouds is his first novel.

Striking Through Clouds: The War Diaries of No. 514 Squadron, RAF
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.39 $Formed on 1st September 1943 as part of the expansion of Bomber Command’s No. 3 Group, 514 Squadron specialised in blind bombing techniques in the drawn out and bloody campaign against Nazi Germany. For the vast majority of its war, 514 Squadron was stationed at RAF Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire, operating Lancaster bombers. Aircrew members were drawn not just from Britain but also Canada, Australia and New Zealand amongst others. Over four hundred members of the squadron were to lose their lives in the two years of the squadron’s existence, which saw the loss on operations of 66 aircraft, with another 14 being written off in accidents. Thrown into the Battle of Berlin in the winter of 1943/4, 514 Squadron also played a pivotal role in supporting the Allied bridgehead in Normandy after D-Day, before reverting to attacks on German infrastructure, including transport facilities and oil production plants. I Am Love: From Nothing.to All Things
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 6.22 $Although documentation on the fate of full-blooded Jews in Nazi Germany is abounding, little has been written on the part-Jews who lived each day under a cloud of uncertainty during that period. Reimar Schultze was born a part-Jew and in his autobiography, I AM Love, he chronicles his experiences in an anti-Semitic environment. He shares the horrors of the Allied bombings that killed 600,000 German civilians; he describes the family's abrupt flight from the Nazis to East Germany, only to run into the arms of the dreaded Soviet invasion. The Schultze's escape from the Russians made them part of the largest naval evacuation in history, in which Soviet torpedo boats sent 26,000 refugees and wounded to the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Following this nightmare the author spent two years in a detention camp in Denmark. The author lost his father and baby sister as a youth. But in spite of tragedy and loneliness Reimar met God in a forest and began his quest for the answers to the questions of origin, purpose, and destiny. As an immigrant to the U.S., Schultze describes his difficulties in adjusting to American culture and Christianity. Disappointed with the church and ill with tuberculosis, he withdrew to a long seclusion in which he found unbroken fellowship with Jesus. He began a journey of thrills, romance and adventure that he now shares by radio and through his writing ministry with people around the globe. This book is laden with rare historical data on WWII. It is packed with extraordinary drama and piercing questions about who we are and what we need to be. It is a beacon of hope to the lost, the hungry, the hurting, the hopeless, and the forsaken.
